Description

Update: 5/9/2017
I decided Nui-Moko could use an update/upgrades. The only major differences is that I redid the feet and lower leg entirely. Other than that I pretty much just added in armor and filled in gaps where I felt they were needed. The core of this MOC is relatively unchanged from it's previous version.

About The MOC

:faint: man was this one a challenge!

Nui-Moko is a MOC I just kinda happened upon building. It started with tinkering with a head design that uses the Dragon Bolt Mask and a Brain attack brain, though here I used both of my Aquagon brains, when after getting the jaw on I thought it resembled the head of a dinosaur, so a dinosaur it became. After that I struggled with figuring out which kind of dinosaur I'd base my MOC on. I eventually settled on the Allosaurus I even gathered many of the photos from the wiki page, arranged them together and printed a reference page out. I based this MOC heavily on the Allosaurus, but it isn't meant to be an exact representation of one.

The building of this MOC was a fairly slow going process. I worked on it inconseculatively for about a month, maybe a little longer. In light of some of my more recent MOCs I made it a point to not make a bricklink order to accommodate my needs for this MOC. I wanted to rely strictly on what I had at the time. I felt the use of bricklink might become something of a crutch to lean on and I didn't want to become dependent on using BL to get a major project done. Therefore I made the point to hold true to my motto and MOC with what I have instead of with what I need. The process of this MOC from start to finish was very evolutionary. The more I built the more I realized I was building on a theme of shifting mass and structure. Nui-Moko is very flexible, poseable and surprisingly stable. I was a bit surprised when I stood it up for the first time and it took little effort to stand it up on carpet no less! I tried to convey these features in the photographs.

"Mokonui" means "Dinosaur" in Maori, so given the Rahi, Nui-Jaga and Nui-Rama, I decided that "Nui-Moko" would be the name of this creature, which in Matoran would mean "Giant Lizard" I'll leave it up to interpretation whether that means any dinosaur like Rahi, or this particular kind. :D

Bio
The Nui-Moko is a type of Creature found primarily on Bota Magna and later on, Sphereus Magna after it was reformed by Mata Nui. They were originally an inhabitant of all of Sphereus Magna but after the Shattering they were isolated to Bota Magna since they reside primarily in the jungle landscape. After the reformation of Spherus Magna they integrated with the other creatures of Bara Magnaand the Rahi of the Matoran Universe. The Bota Magnan Vorox called these creatures "Kyoryu" but it was the Matoran that eventually named it the Nui-Moko, this name eventually stuck and was use universally across Spherus Magna.

After the reformation of Spherus Magna The Nui-Moko became the main predatory creature of Rock Steeds. While Rock Steeds have acute senses, the Nui-Moko can simply out run and overpower them in a chase or a fight. Similarly to the Rock Steed, Unlike Rock Steeds, Nui-Moko cannot be tamed. Efforts to tame them have historically been unsuccessful and usually end in the trainer's death. It is best to simply avoid them at all cost.

Untamed Nui-Moko pose as much threat to any sentient beings as any wild rahi or creature. Most Nui-Moko are larger than the average Toa, and tower over Matoran, Turaga, and Agori. Larger sentient beings such as Titans can outsize Nui-Moko and often times be stronger than them physically. However, an angered nui-Moko can be very unmanageable and very dangerous, especially in packs. They can attack without provocation in some instances when encountered in the more secluded regions of the former Bota Magnan jungle or when they are hungry and looking for a meal. Unfortunately tricks like playing dead don't work, and the chances of surviving a fight with one are slim unless equipped with sufficient weaponry. If attacked and pursued by a Nui-Moko the best course of action is to quickly climb up a tree or shear rock face as they can't climb.

You know what I love? Dinosaurs. The idea of giant monstrous beasts with hundreds of sharp teeth that roar like heavy metal singers makes me feel an almost childish joy. Though, throughout the land that it the BIONICLE MOCing community, it's an incredibly rare sight that I see a decent dinosaur MOC. Most of the time, they're either black and silver trash, or horribly-designed abominations of molded plastic. So, here we have, a dinosaur MOC.

Let's get some quick shit out of the way, because there's a kind of big rant late in this review. The colors are gorgeous, being incredibly well-placed, and with a serious escape from the horrid black and silver mess. They're fluent, and look like nothing I've seen before.

This is somewhat petty, but the elbows seem a bit thin. The forearms and wrists are actually larger than it, so there's some awkward anatomy for 'ye. Stick some tires on the joints, or maybe something like a bulky rubber band or plastic tape to fill it in more, and it'll look nice.

Another odd complaint, but the bottom jaw seems a bit awkward. No teeth whatsoever. Not only that, but the texture and shaping don't seem to match the top jaw very well. SPEAKING OF WHICH------The top jaw is also almost toothless. I imagine it would be pretty hard to cram a whole library of teeth into the jaws, but it's still something to bring up. I dunno, maybe this is just an old fart that forgot to put his dentures in.

I really like the use of the horrid brain slugs. They actually fit in well with the shaping, appearing as an actual spine. Nice way to use otherwise useless parts. The skeleton on the bottom part of the tail doesn't really match up. It's very red, while the skeleton on top is very black. If the skeleton on the bottom was black to compliment the top, it's pretty nice.

Now, those were all some pretty petty nitpicks. At this point, if I'm searching this hard for something to complain about, this MOC has to be doing something right. So now we'll move onto something a bit more interesting and worth criticizing. No, it's not the legs. We'll get to that later....

If anything, one of my major complaints is the tip of thew tail. It looks less like a proper end to a tail, and more like blade spam. Now, while a dinosaur with a sword sticking off the end of his tail sounds TFS (TOTALLY FUCKING SWEET), it somewhat counters the proper dinosaur look the MOC has. I'll come back more to this in a bit...

Now, this is kind of an odd criticism I have. The head doesn't have the proper Allosaurus giant eyebrows of doom. Not all pictures have these, and the skeleton doesn't really show proof of these, but most pictures do have these eyebrows, so I would have preferred if they were present.

Now, time for the giant rant of doom. If you often say "TL;DR," strap on your evacuation helmet, because this is gonna be long.

Now, the legs, have had constant criticism. We all know why they don't look right, and we know how they could be fixed. They really seem like the part that the creator made at the very end when the rest of the glorious masterpiece was finished. I'm guilty of this, too (see Kusii), and it's happened before. However, the humanoid shape is not my major complaint. No, my major complaint is that they are wasted potential, and so is the tail.

Think about this: When you imagine humanoid, armored legs with pistons and mechanical details clearly being shown off when attached to a giant BIONICLE dinosaur, what's your first thought? If it was, "THAT'S WRONG," then you are correct. Now, what about your second thought? If it was, "STILL WRONG," you are wrong. What it should have been was "CYBORG DINOSAUR WTF SO AWESOME IT HURTS."

I mean, what the fuck? 3rdeye really shot himself in the foot here (no pun intended). The tail has the same problem. Both the tail and the legs are very mechanical looking, while the rest of the dinosaur is very real and fleshy. If the legs and tail had proper coloring, and a few more mechanical details were added all over the dinosaur, this thing would be so unbelievably awesome and unique that I would defend it AT ALL FUCKING COSTS.

Now, another possibility is that the legs and tail could be treated as prosthetic limbs, which would also be so amazingly original that I would cry pure happiness. I mean, just the idea of a MOC that has a prosthetic limb is rarely ever used, but a fucking dinosaur with one? Amazing.

So there. Three ways to make this MOC higher quality. Either edit the tail and legs to be more dinosaur looking, add a few more tech details to make it look glorious and awesome, or change the legs and tail to artificial limbs and come up with an obvious sob-story parody for the bio. All three will do, for they are all preferred options.

As the MOC stands currently, it's a mixed bag. Sure, there's some obvious flaws, but it's positives are pretty amazing. I mean, any dinosaur MOC that isn't black/silver drab or a horribly-proportioned piece of shit is fine in my book. So, all in all, a good, solid dinosaur MOC with prosthetic limbs and rotted teeth.

Fucking hell, why can't I be this passionate with writing when writing fucking school essays?
