Bionicle MOC: Matteo by 3rdeye88 Bionicle MOC: Matteo by 3rdeye88
About The MOC
Matteo is what I consider to be my official Self-MOC. He is by far my most developed character of any of my MOCs, currently assembled or otherwise. He's also my personal favorite and most worked on my, which was why he became my Self-MOC Matteo represents an old Plague Doctor. This was also what he was called before I gave him a name.

The idea I've tried to instill within this MOC was practicality, antiquity, and style. All of his accessories were meant to be as realistic as possible, while retaining a theme that Matteo is an old fashioned kind of person with his own sense of style. While I can't date any specific period he is supposed to represent in MOC form I do know that all his artifacts predate modern technology and probably predates 19th century technology as well. I would place the artifacts on his person from around 14th-18th century.

A little about his character
Matteo is an immortal, a survivor of a race of Ancient people who found a method to cease aging and gain physical attributes that were wiped out through genocide. Matteo is immortal in the sense that he does not age, and has a certain resilience to diseases and injury, though he still could be killed by most conventional methods(shot or pierced through the head, burned, etc). These attributes have allowed Matteo to survive where most others would have died. This also made him excellent as an Apothecary during a plague as he was always immune to it, or at worst experienced some sickness, but not enough to kill him. Matteo's biography is quite extensive, and as a result I don't quite have it all mapped or figured out. Everything I do know I have learned through the help of collaboratiors, naimly Acyrotin where he appears as a main character in her series, Witching Hour, and collaborating with wolfbossx. He helped early on in figuring out who Matteo is and a lot of Matteo's origin story came from collaborating with Jake. I can assure you though it is quite a tale to be told.

This portrayal in a stark playful exaggeration of his character for comedic effect, and should not be considered what Matteo in other portrayals would be like.

Bionicle MOC: Matteo by *3rdeye88 is an original character made entirely from Lego elements. The attention to detail in this piece is remarkable and definitely worth a closer look. ( Featured by Astralseed )
:iconkuroetshiro:
First, I'd like to say that I'm taking study time to do this critique so you better be happy. x'D

Alright, Matteo has been going through updates frequently, however, his overall appearance hasn't changed so he's been actually improved, not revamped. That's something that Dave's got going there. The various assortments are cool with little intricate designs that help it pop out instead of blend in with Matteo. His design is indeed more unique than many other MOCs out there, especially in terms of mascot characters due to his more unorthodox style and shape. The techniques used suit him well and certainly go out of the normal compared to many other self MOCs using pieces originally intended for other purposes effectively as a different purpose, such as a metru forearm and a glatorian hand. His head design continues to be a central piece of him due to its unique nature of being a plague doctor's mask, a feat not commonly reached by other creators. Although the impact from Matteo is obvious as he is more so of a wise character, it is not easily seen by watchers who haven't any experience with MOCs.

Overall, he's pretty much a MOC with a lot of originality and detail that deserves a good amount of attention.

K, hope you guys like my critique. xD

:icongong-the-hawkeye:
this one is better than hyde, but i still dont see this as being a decent moc.

Vision:
the vision here is nice, but that big cheesy watch looks turrible and the overall moc is not... good

Originality:
as far as i know, there arent many witch doctor mocs, but characters and concepts for mocs are almost endless, so that doesnt count for much, and the skeleton is looking similar to alot of mocs ive seen in the past.

Technique:
the build is too simple here; the skeleton with double jointed knees and elbows are ok, but you didnt do much in the way of armoring to compensate for the large joints; you should have tried to partially cover them or directly armor them in my opinion. the armor on this one is sub par, and boring, the armor gives no interesting shape and serves as nothing but "filler" the feet are overlly simple, the hand pieces on the hips are bare and lazy looking, and the arms are WAY too simple; those forearms could not be more simple, and the upper arms dont really fit the theme of the moc. the shape is bad, and the moc is far too simple; please work on more complicated, intricate designs.

Impact:
it was ok, but again i was all: " dayum these shapes be turrrrrrrrrible"

sorry, man, but this is not an average moc, its actually well below average

Really like the solid black of the legs and the new lantern. It's a thing o' beauty. What happened to his goggles though? They're gone... :(

Thanks Gale. I know that Lantern came out amazing! Everyone's talking about it.

I got rid of them because they kept confusing people about where his actual eyes were. They sat above his eyeline and he'd pull them down when needed. They never sat in the eyesockets right and on top of that, they weren't my design, they were wolfbossx's. So I just did away with them. Think of them as an evolutionary dead end on Matteo.

Might I ask what you'd change? I'd change things regarding his color distribution at this point. But design wise I'm happy with him as is.

I'd probably add a little bit to the lower arms. I usually try to stay away from single-block-wide limbs. Also maybe change the feet, but I have no clue what feet I'd substitute. Maybe custom feet, and use black rahkshi heads to keep the curved look.

Ah I see. I'd add studs there, except that's where I have to connect his wrist blades, so I leave it empty. I've been told the feet could use some work before. I definitely could, but I really like the look of the Mantax feet, they look like big burly boots for him to stomp around in and kick ass. :XD: The only way to get that look would be to use system bows which would be too blocky. Rahkshi heads wouldn't fit or have the right look IMO.

3rdeye88 Featured By Owner Nov 20, 2014  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Thank you.

The hands aren't quite my design. I first saw Lol-Pretzel use them. They're done by taking one of the old style bionicle socket pieces, attaching this piece to the 2X2 plate with bars in the middle segmet. Put a 2x2 plate on top point both the studs of the plate and the bar piece down and it'll all fit into place on the socket. The grooves in the socket piece just barely clutch onto the studs so when you move the fingers around the plate piece doesn't move.

Trust me I've wished for access to a better camera. Plus I still need to make a light box. On top of that the mini laptop that I have to use crashes if I make a collage beyond a certain size, and becomes painfully laggy even when it's not near that large. That's why they're jumbled to an extent.

 Thanks for the fave. Haha its never to late to jump back into it. We even have a term for it, we call it "the dark age." That means someone grew up, stopped building or playing with lego, then got back into it later on when they realized its still a lot of fun, even as adults. Though I should probably warn you, its quite the blackhole of time and money, even us avid buyers of lego who know how to find good deals and where to go still end up spending a bunch of money. www.flickr.com/photos/thirdeye… but when you can go to cool conventions like the one I recently went to and posted some photos from on my flickr account, some might say its worth it. Its a fun creative hobby to have. :D And some are lucky enough to do it for a living. :)

Ah I see. That would make you pretty limited in what you could do honestly. You'd probably need to get some more bionicle parts, especially some of the later stuff, Technic really comes in handy for "gluing" it all together, and now Hero Factory is great for stability and movement. Bionicle by itself doesn't go very far in MOCing.

well if they're first gen then they're older than that. Bionicle came out in 2001, its 2013 now.

Hmm okay well I hope it works out for you and you get back into it. If you need advice on where to get parts we "serious MOCers" have our ways. :giggle:. And if you need any advice about MOCing then feel free to ask. :D
