Bionicle MOC: Kutumah by 3rdeye88 Bionicle MOC: Kutumah by 3rdeye88
About the MOC Kūtūmah(Pronouncee Khoo-Too-Mah) is a cultural amalgamation of a Tiki/Hawaiian god, Maori god, Native American Totem poles as well as kinda resembling a Japanese Tengu. The strongest influences though are the Polynesian cultures, Hawaiian and Maori. is one of four main gods in Hawaiian mythology. He is their God of War. I'm also going with Hawaiian cultural references with his weapon, a spiked club. It is said Hawaiian warriors, the Koa would often use spiked clubs made from sharks teeth or stone. And since I had these Stronius club parts I figured it'd be a good fit. Tūmatauenga is the Maori equivalent to Kū. Tumataunga is also mostly who I'm basing Kūtūmah's personalities or tendencies on. Tuma...where have we heard that name in a warrior like character before? :iconursarcasticplz: Lastly I'm culling inspiration from the Ethiopian god Maher(Mostly because Kūtū was too short and I needed another syllable:XD:). After this I cross the line from Tiki totems into more Native American Totems by presenting multiple faces in a vertical line. The Japanese Tengu didn't have any real influence here. I just think that Kūtūmah's face ends up resembling those as well. the idea there was strictly Tiki gods/Tiki masks though.

Building the MOC
Kūtūmah was initially inspired by ~welcometothedarksyde's Bruiser The red Onua Nuva mask really stood out to me and after looking at it for a bit I noticed that it looked rather similar to a tiki mask, That's where the idea to do something "tiki" came from. I initially was going to build a little MOC using the mask with googly eyes, but then I got what is basically this idea, a large tiki mask with a totem pole body. The rest was execution. I built the mask/head first and this was the result on the first try. The body however proved very difficult. I went through several failed designs before I came to this. Purchasing a Core Hunter proved to be just what I needed to get me out of design gridlock. I then spent the next two days building the bulk of him, then tweaking the designs and filling in small gaps.
Overall I'm incredibly satisfied with this MOC, Aesthetics, color distribution, structure, all are really satisfactory. Kūtūmah is pretty stable to. I was almost able to get him to stand on one leg. But the feet are too rounded on the sides. I don't think there's much I would need to do to improve this MOC. I'm happy with everything that's in my control. Washers and pins in black and red would be nice, but lego dropped the ball big time when its come to common parts color availability

Bio
I don't have much of a bio for him. More like a personality description.

Kūtūmah is somewhat an obnoxious mean-spirited individual. As a god of war he can be vindictive, manipulative to turn people against each other, and loud as he likes to chant war chants and play war drums(which I should probably make for him). He's basically your typical war deity but with a flair for music and theatricality. He's not all bad though. he rewards hard work, skill and loyalty to authority above all else. He would much rather see a tribe fight another tribe in all out war than to see a tribe squabble amongst itself. For this reason he mostly coerces village leaders into fighting and punishes those why betray their superiors.

If Kūtūmah were part of the bionicle universe he'd obviously be a Makuta. Other than that I don't really know.

Thanks for reading, favoriting and commenting. :D :iconthankyousignplz:

I think a reasonable critique should look at the positives first. Overall i think this is another excellent MOC from you as always, the bulkiness of the waist downwards really represents its brute personality, I mainly like how you used most of the masks, they really work with the overall look and i love the custom head design. I think my only critique would have to be the arms, they don't seem to show that he is a brute, they seem too slim, i think adding more to the arms would make this MOC perfect.

A great MOC overall

*cough* Son, I am disappoint.

OK, so let's get the good things out of the way as fast as possible, because there's a lot of bad to cover.

The concept is interesting, the face is genius, the use of the masks is well done, and it has some good engineering in the upper legs. Now, let's get the bad in here.

The arms are skinny, bare, ugly, and badly engineered. Not the kind of arms you'd see on a god of war. The shoulders are unarmored, which is definitely not what you think of when you think god of war.

The club is supposed to be made from shark teeth.....What? There's no shark teeth whatsoever on that club. It's black and red. Shark teeth are white, and red when covered in blood. The club looks more like a molten rock.

The lower legs really need something. They're so skinny, and have no armor on them. They really could use some kind of ankle armor.

The hands, OH THE HANDS. They're so skinny. He's this big god of war, with all this power, and strength, yet his hands look as if they belong on a smaller MOC. Finally, the back.

A good question would be, "why is he so fat?" A member of a tribe like this should be rather muscular, and somewhat devoid of food in the body, yet this guy has big chunky hips, and a big belly. He looks like he an entire bag of chips once a day.

The back is just so.....Bare. He has all this armor on the front, all these masks on his belly, yet NOTHING on his back besides some lazy Hero Factory armor. There's barely anything back there.

So yes, the MOC's vision is pretty good, and well researched, but the execution has many flaws, and needs work. There are some good ideas in here, but they really get overwhelmed by the bad.

I for one think that the flat face helps amplify the Tiki look, almost coming off as a Tikimask.
The only critique I have are how the arms are supported. I think that there could be more coverage

Thanks Shayne. I'm glad the face looks like a tiki mask, that was the idea.
What do you mean by more coverage? The arms are pretty stable if that's what you're wondering. In the "oooga booga booga" pose I was going for in the lower right picture, I picked him up in that pose, carried him though the house and was kinda teasing my family with it, wiggling the MOC around, and he didn't even budge from that pose. I was rather impressed.

The eyes themselves are what's flaming. But this makes you like the fourth person to mention it, third if you don't count me thinking that while I was building him. I was kinda worried he looked too close to aku but I figured it wasn't that bad of a comparison, Aku was kinda a bad ass.

I would, but I'd be saying mostly the same stuff. I see almost exactly how this moc was put together and I must say it is interesting. But that's the only new thing I have to say as far as I know.

He doesn't have a internal skeleton structures for certain areas of his body does he? [Just curious.

Thanks Zach.
That was intended. I tried giving him a nose, it looked weird. The face is supposed to be more resembling of a mask itself, its just his "main face" and tiki masks are really disproportionately big.
I didn't want bulky arms on this guy. Then he woulda looked brutish and I didn't want that. I wanted more of a "tiki pole with arms legs," His arms were thinner than they are now, but then he looked too scrawny. This is why I didn't double joint the elbows, it woulda bulked him up too much.

Glad you like it. Thanks for the feedback. :D

so many masks, so many awesomes but seriously great work on this one.I love the shaping of the torso and the face is just perfect. the colours are perfect i need to buy some different coloured masks.so many compliments so ima poit out little problems(not enough problems for critique) first of some of the joints look a little empty and the hands look odd. The lower leg could have a tiny bit more filing

Thanks MS(and not the disease :XD:). That means a lot to me coming from you. You've got interesting shaping and NPU'ing down.

Hmmm which joints exactly? I had to leave some room for movement. Movement is very key in my MOCs. And I agree, I wanted to fill in the piraka shins but I just had to have those indigo tiles on the front. That was one of those situations where a little color distribution made a big difference. So I had to sacrifice the filling in of the back. I couldn't find any pin parts to use that'd fit and stay in to the stud to) pins from the bottom of em. :/
The hands do look of in the bottom right picture they fingers are rotated a bit to be spread out. Are the hands hard to see in the other pictures?

thanks and im not a disease i hope ;) and i meant the wrists and the elbows but i can understand the elbows(sounds weird)also the hands look fine its just the in the bottom right pic it looks inverted. the armpit area a little could have been filled up but if movement is a problem then leave it.

Makuta is a race of bionicles. There's makuta Teridax, who was originally just known as "the Makuta" cause it wasn't established as a race then, then he became makuta teridax when it was established that there are other Makutas. The badguys from the Phanoka and mistika series are also makuta, the icarax, mutranz and a few others I can't recall. Those are all examples of Makuta.
