Description

Update(Jan-18-14)
Hyde got a complete overhaul. This was something I've wanted to do for a long while now but never quite felt I had the right parts to get the job done right. I finally got the push I needed to pull this lanky dude off the "Plague Doctors" shelf and revamp him after getting The Hobbit: Barrel Escape. I then completely revisited every aspect o Hyde.

The new updates include
  • Improved designs overall
  • Cleaned up color scheme.
  • Added Dark Tan throughout his body and Dark Brown to his hat.
  • Added the wine barrels and goblet "accessories."
  • Changed his eye color from Trans-red to Trans-orange(Amber as I call it).
  • Rebuilt most of the arms and legs.
  • reshaped torso(crotch and back mostly)
  • Rebuilt his staff making it studier.
  • Made him a bit taller.

About The MOC

Here's yet another MOC I did in about a day. This time is a Fusion MOC, using System parts and technic/bionicle. Woohoo. I Technically only have one other Fusion MOC, the Reta-Sarka-V12 Bionicle MOC: Reta-Sarka-V12 by 3rdeye88 I've accomplished a few things I've always wanted to do with this MOC, and they are:
  • Build a very lanky "standard size" style MOC, but simply elongate and exaggerate the proportions. I was thinking of doing this by making my own version of Treebeard or a generic Ent From Lord Of the Rings. But I got to that item on the checklist with "Nales" here.
  • Make a Scarecrow. I didn't really have any distinction as to whether it'd be a benevolent scare crow, or an evil one like what's more popular nowadays. This one is the first. :)
  • Use brown and Tan parts as the main color scheme. I tried to do this on Atlas to a small extent, but didn't really fully incorporate the color Tan.
  • Build a fusion MOC figure. As stated, I had done a fusion MOC once before, but not a figure.

I guess in a somewhat subconscious manner, this MOC had been given a fair amount of thought before building it.
One giant icon cookie to anyone who can figure out which part I used as the basis for his body. I'll give you a hint, it is indeed a system part, its tan, and you can make out the angle of it on either side of his torso. :) Its a pretty unusual part to.
The printed piece on his chest is supposed to represent a glowing from inside his chest.
Also, I'm aware of his Sheppard's stick being flimsy and bent slightly. Its made of axels being held together by the tubes and connected with axle connectors.
Interesting piece of trivia is that Hyde's(Or Autumnales') head is more or less what I wanted to change Matteo's head to, to make it more proportionate to his body without his mask or hat. I would have substituted some of the colors to fit his color scheme, leaving just the face in tan.

Bio(also updated on Jan-18-14)
Hyde as he's commonly referred to is a benevolent spirit of the harvest. He only appears in the mortal world during the autumn months when it is harvest season. Hyde's existence dates as far back to when humans began farming and cultivating the lands they inhabited for sustainability. This makes him very old. So old in fact, only other immortal beings know his true name, Autumnales. IRL this means "Late Autumn" in Latin. He is referred to as "Hyde" by mortals and in mortal legend for his mischievous nature to hide from people or hide small possessions from mortals in unusual places for his own amusement.

Hyde's overall purpose in the mortal world is to protect the balance of nature and human's interactions with it. How he does this comes in several forms. His main device is to bestow good or ill fortunes on humans to either reward them or punish them for their practices. He often will simply appear to farmers off in the distance in their fields. When he appears on a sunny day this is an omen of good will and that next years harvest will do well, if he appears on an overcast or stormy day, this is to be taken as a bad omen and a warning to the farmer to change their ways for it upsets the balance of nature. In extreme cases where the mortal committing the imbalance will not change Hyde will go so far as to beckon evil spirits to the farmer to bestow them with misfortune. This can be as tame as a series of bad luck, to crops and cattle dying, and even as extreme as the death of family members or death to the mortal themselves. By the same token mortals blessed with his approval will see good fortune and harvest, and Hyde will ward away evil spirits.

Because humans cultivate the lands they inhabit to survive, Hyde views the cutting down of trees and other plants as a necessity to the balance, yet it is when humans over extract without returning what was taken that he will then take action. The relationship he must maintain is the give and take from nature. Humans who take from the land and make no effort to renew it are the ones who are punished. It is ultimately up to the mortal to interpret the signs being given and know they must change or maintain their course of action. Hyde cannont make a human change, they must want to themselves.

Hyde celebrates and enjoys the fruits of the harvest. It is said that if a nearby barrel of wine or a wheel of cheese comes up missing, then it is of the finest quality, for Hyde has taken some for himself to sample. When visited in good will, he is seen holding a barrel of wine in one arm and a golden goblet in the other, offering a toast of achievement and good will towards the mortal he's visiting. If holding his Shepard's staff, it is a sign that that person has strayed from the path and must change their ways. However those who can see spirits of their own accord and not just when those spirits want to appear to mortals can see him hiking across the land, staff in hand and wine in the other. If he is approached in a friendly manner he almost always stops and offers a glass of wine and some form of food(often bread, cheese or cured meats).

Hyde himself is a very reclusive and passive aggressive spirit. He seldom makes close contact with mortals with the exception of those who have strong connections to the spiritual world and those he befriends, Matteo is both of these. Hyde is also a very quit individual, only making a high pitched "oooo" sound to convey emotion. This can turn into a loud growling sound to those who have provoked him. When he does make contact with humans from the material world he likes to engage in hide and seek, giving him his nickname to those who know him. His relationship with Matteo is a unique one in the sense that Matteo is one of few humans who are immortal, and maintains balance with and respects nature. He also seldom acts on his own. When he must act against a human he doesn't physically harm them himself, he will call upon a malicious spirit to do it himself. Though, if he must ward away a spirit that will not simply obey his wishes he will then call upon a combative spirit to drive off the evil one. This seldom happens as most spirits, even evil ones respect his wishes Hyde takes no side in anyone's quarrels. Hyde is a truly peaceful character who knows no foe. He is sometimes known as "The beckoner of masters" in the spiritual world for he only calls upon those skilled at their crafts, whether they be good or evil. Hyde has many names he is known by though.

Well, let's get started, shall we?

Vision:
At first glance, this MOC looks like a creation entirely made out of Lego parts, but if you look a little bit more closely, you can recognise the Bionicle parts. I am personally not fond of Bionicle MOCs that involve regular Lego parts, but you used them in a way that it doesn't bother me too much.

Originality:
This is the powerful side of this MOC. Even though this colour scheme is used in pretty much every brown coloured Bionicle, it seems different on this one. The staff is simple, but very well done.

Technique:
You connected the Lego and Bionicle parts in a good way, but the fact that the legs seem to be made entirely out of Lego bothers me a little. Also, I have a feeling that the legs are a bit too long, but it isn't that big of an issue. The body and arms are very well doen, I do love the barrels you used to connect the upper and lower arms. The thing I don't like is the head, it has an eerie and animal like feeling to it, whereas this MOC is clearly humanoid.

Impact:
This MOC doesn't look frightening, powerful or even intimidating. If someone said this MOC was based on Gandalf or Dumbledore, I would have believed them. It has that old-mentor like aura to it.

Overall: A good MOC, but definitely not one of your best.

Whew. That was a long critique.
